Gubbels' white gold

It has long been the pearl of the greengrocer: the asparagus. Our grower has five generations of experience growing this precious and beloved vegetable. We went to visit Walter Gubbels in the foresty Helvoirt in Brabant province. Together with his brother Ton, Walter Gubbels grows 40 hectares of asparagus, of which about 34 hectares of white asparagus.

For more than 110 years, asparagus has been grown in Helvoirt by the Gubbels family. Even today it is still visible a traditional family business, just like Van Gelder. Walter's mother stands in the cosy shop selling asparagus to residents of the region. She salutes happily when we come in. Unfortunately, Father Gubbels died. "He would have loved this and would still have been in the field, I'm sure," Gubbels said.

Not only is the surroundings around the Loonse and Drunense Duinen very beautiful, the sandy soil is also really ideal for asparagus. "We are on one of the best grounds for asparagus in the Netherlands. Light sandy soil is very important for quality," says Gubbels. In addition, the Brabant grower uses real price winners of the aspergeras Backlim to grow with. "One of the well-known varieties, which is very strong especially in terms of taste." All in the sign of taste and quality.
