Gubbels' White Gold
For years, it has been the gem of the greengrocer: the asparagus. Our grower has five generations of experience in cultivating this precious and beloved vegetable. We visited Walter Gubbels in the wooded region of Helvoirt, Brabant. Together with his brother Ton, Walter Gubbels grows 40 hectares of asparagus, of which approximately 34 hectares are white asparagus.
For over 110 years, the Gubbels family has been cultivating asparagus in Helvoirt. Even today, it remains a traditional family business, much like Van Gelder. Walter's mother is still in the cozy shop, selling asparagus to local residents. She greets us cheerfully when we enter. Sadly, Father Gubbels has passed away. "He would have loved this and would still be working in the field, I'm sure of it," says Gubbels.
Not only is the area around the Loonse and Drunense Dunes beautiful, but the sandy soil is also ideal for asparagus. "We are located on one of the best soils for asparagus in the Netherlands. Light sandy soil is very important for the quality," explains Gubbels. In addition, the Brabant grower uses true award-winning asparagus varieties like Backlim for cultivation. "One of the famous varieties, particularly strong in terms of flavor." Everything is focused on taste and quality.
